The Aloha State is the USA’s 50th state and the only one outside of North America. This volcanic archipelago in the Pacific Ocean comprises hundreds of islands. Each has their own exciting secrets, surfing challenges, and beautiful scenery, making Hawaii deserving of its title: The Paradise in the Pacific.
Oahu Island is the home of the state capital, Honolulu, where there is plenty to keep you entertained: museums, aquariums, zoos, botanical gardens, and the historical ‘Iolani Palace. It is also where beach enthusiasts, surfers, and divers can all delight themselves on the golden Waikiki Beach, a stone’s throw from some of Hawaii’s best resorts and under the imposing shadow of Diamond Head. The USS Arizona Memorial site is nearby, too, commemorating the attack at Pearl Harbour with a stylish memorial and the sunken hull of the battleship beneath.
Tourists looking to explore as much of the striking backdrops by boat should focus their sailing along the striking Na Pali coast. Those preferring to view the islands by land have no shortage of astounding national parks to sightsee: the erupting lava flows at Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii; high, subtropical hikes at Haleakala National Park on Maui; and the spectacular Waimea Canyon State Park on Kauai.
But there is just as much to discover below the water. Cave networks beneath the islands are numerous, while Pacific sea creatures are best observed by donning a snorkel. The brave amongst you may even fancy diving deeper to swim with sharks.
Finally, if you want to get to know the people and culture of Hawaii, there are plenty of lively places throughout the islands, including the Polynesian Cultural Center and Kona Coffee Living History Farm. However, to truly integrate with the locals and enjoy a genuine Hawaiian experience, no holidaymaker should leave the archipelago without observing (and joining in) one of the many island luaus.
Climate
Hawaii’s climate is consistently warm throughout the year, so choosing when to visit depends on balancing rainfall with prices. Early summer months are the busiest because they are the driest, but they are also the most humid. While the wet season is predominantly from November to March, hurricane season lasts from June to November. January and February are the best months to visit to enjoy savings on hotels and flights. Rainfall is only a little higher than the rest of the year while warm sunshine remains the dominating weather pattern.
Meals
Like many other US states and cities, Hawaii meal prices are somewhat comparable to those in the UK. An inexpensive meal for one is approximately $16.25, while a three-course meal for two at a midrange restaurant can cost anything from $45 to $100. Alcohol varies wildly depending on where you go, with domestic beers from $3 to $8 per bottle, and imported beer around $7 per bottle. A cup of coffee is relatively expensive at $4 to $6, while a 0.33 litre bottle of water averages $1.65.
